Throwback Thursday – ZuneCardr

Standard

ZuneCardr was a third-party companion application that used Zune Social and related services to help find out what friends are listening to and to share favourite tracks, albums or artists, recent plays and badges earned for listening to music and was written by myself. This application took advantage of the Zune Cards that were available which were a flash-based embeddable widget that could be placed on a blog or website and the application allowed this to be used in the form of a Windows Phone application, it also added additional features such as music playback for Zune Music Pass subscribers.

ZuneCardr began before Windows Phone as a Windows application which was later ported to Silverlight and was an application that allowed the creation of an image version of a Zune Card from Zune Social that could be shared on websites or blogs. There were many templates available plus themes to customise them, some templates also showed an image of an owned Zune device in its colour if desired. This Silverlight application was refined and updated before becoming the basis of the Windows Phone application that followed.

ZuneCardr was one of the first 1,000 apps available for Windows Phone at launch and over the lifetime of the Zune Social service gained over 388,300 downloads and throughout that period was the only way to use the Zune Social service on Windows Phone as the Zune features on Windows Phone did not include Zune Social, otherwise the Zune website was the only way to see Zune Social information. It was a popular application and brought many features from the service that otherwise would have not been available on the phone. Although Zune Social no longer exists, this application was a very popular addition to the service and its legacy lives on in its spiritual successor, the Groove Music companion app TuneCardr.
